Now comes the hard part. Take each functional group (“bucket”) and place it in its appropriate column according to its value to advancing your business goals. Avoid the temptation to say that every “bucket” is a “High Priority”. At this early stage, use your best judgment as to the value each of these “buckets” has to advancing your business goals. A key to determining the value of these “buckets” to your business may be looking at where your business is spending its Research and Development and Marketing efforts. Later, we can do a more objective exercise using “decision making software” designed for this purpose to determine these priorities. My experience has been that when this exercise is over, the “buckets” should be roughly evenly distributed in all columns with maybe even a fewer number of “buckets” in the “High Priority” column than in the other two columns. I have set out below an example of how the “buckets” for the drill example above might be prioritized for a particular business.
